Pinewood
Miniature Railway is lucky to have many members who own and run their
locomotives at our various running days. Shown below are the locomotives that
you will hopefully see during your visit to the railway. Please note though
these locomotives are not run every running day, so hopefully you will come back
and visit us again to try to see and ride behind them all.
Technical
note:
The Pinewood Miniature Railway permanent way (the
track) can accommodate locomotives and rolling stock of two gauges; gauge this
is the distance between the rails. The smaller gauge is 5 inches (5’’) and
the larger is 7 ¼ inches (7 ¼’’), there are smaller and larger gauges to
be found on miniature railways in this country but these can probably be
considered the two most popular.
Gauge:
71/4’’
This
locomotive is based on the North American C19 Class 2-8-0 which ran on the
North American 3ft gauge, they where wood burning 10-wheelers which ran
during the 1880s. This model locomotive number 391 was built in the
late 1990s to the established John Milner design. The loco is
128" long has 3.25" cylinder diameter and weighs approximately
1350lbs, with a working boiler pressure of 110 psi.
There are two C19s within the Society, each
capable of hauling the heaviest loads.

A
recent addition to the Pinewood stable is our Chairman's Dick
Woodruff’s
auto-trolley. This Locomotive is powered by a 1930s vintage Lister petrol
engine, the drive
is transferred via an Eaton hydraulic box and chain
drive to both axles. Its an unusual
extra item of motive power.

This
locomotive is based on the British Southern Region Maunsell L1 Class 4-4-0
which ran on the old London Brighton and South Coast railway, the design
was based on Wainwright's L class
and the engines where built by the North British Locomotive company in
Glasgow in 1926.
The model is based on engine number 31786 which was the last locomotive of
its type to be scrapped in 1962. The original model was built during the
early 80's and original owned by a gentleman who worked on the full size
engine at Guildford shed during early 60's, since being bought and worked
on by it current owner. For a 4-4-0 it has a surprising amount of pulling
power and has seen its first service for Pinewood during the 2007 season.
31786 is now undergoing its five year overhaul so won't be seen again
until at least the 2009 season.

Battery Electric Diesel outline
This battery electric locomotive built and owned by one of
our members is a superb performer, having the instant traction that is available
with electric locomotive is very useful as steam engines take much more
maintenance. This engine is based on the British Railways Class 20
Locomotive and has been painted in Railfreight Grey livery. The prototype
for this model is the last of the class to be built, originally numbered
D8327 and named ‘TRACTION’. The model, which bears the name ‘TRACTION’
is nearly 6ft long the chassis is in 10mm steel The controller is an
off the shelf 60 amp controller and each controls a pair of 250 watt
motors that are directly mounted on the bogie axles.
