7 1/4 inch Gauge Class 20's
Owner, Ian Shanks
Ian's
7 /14" gauge models are kits from Model Engineering Supplies and
each measures
74" over the buffers. The
prototype for Ian’s first Class 20 model is the last of the Class 20's
to be built, originally
numbered D8327 and named ‘TRACTION’.
Ian has
modified the buffers, cab, front panel and bogies to match his chosen
prototype
locomotive. The
model uses two 60 Ampere
Parkside
control units and these are linked together with each controlling a
pair of 250 watt electric motors that are directly mounted on the bogie
axles. The
model was a mainstay of the Pinewood
Railways public running locomotive fleet for many years until Ian moved
to Chesterfield to become one of the societies most distant members.
However
the frequent practice on the national rail networks was to operate two
Class 20's together, so Ian has added a second Class 20 named the
'MURRAY B HOFMEYER' to his fleet. This time the model is
fitted
with the newer 750 Watt motors (one in each bogie) but still uses
Parkside control units. Both locos are fitted with the Magpie
Developments Ltd sound systems.
The
two locos are shown during their visit to the Pinewood track for the
Pinewood Festival when their combined 3.3 Horsepower made very light
work of pulling heavy loads around the track.
