Junior Engineers

Click here to read Matthew Quilliam's short stories about the locomotives of the Pinewood Railway.

We formally started started a junior membership scheme mid-2009 and everyone in the club recognises its value. Not only is it the future of the club but we have also seen immediate benefits with support in all aspects.  Whether this be during our regular maintenance days or running days, our 'Junior Engineers' undertake a wide range of supervised duties and are invauable to our continued success.  On non-public running days they can often be found at the controls of members' steam and electric locos and have proven very competent.

We have signed up to the 7¼" Proficiency Testing Scheme, administed by 7¼" Gauge Society Limited, (the recognised body for this gauge).  The voluntary scheme has been introduced on a national basis to encourage as many participants as possible to obtain a level of skill and knowledge whilst enjoying, and becoming safely involved in, our hobby.  Whilst it sets standards of awareness it is not a licence to drive a locomotive. It is a way of rewarding enthusiastic participation; it sets goals that encourage courteous, safe involvement in 7¼” gauge railways.  Entry to the three-part scheme with Bronze, Silver and Gold awards is dependant on participant’s skill levels and is not restricted by age.

At Pinewood we have three nominated members who look after this, and we are helping all our junior members to initially obtain the Bronze Award, by answering a set of questions testing general knowledge of the hobby. Successful participants are issued with a badge and a certificate.

Thanks to a 'Big Lottery' grant we have been able to purchase an electric loco kit which the
Junior Engineers are responsible for constructing, under supervision.  Click here for more information on this exciting project.
